Mural Mile auto tour in Philadelphia

FOR YEARS NOW, outdoor murals have been big in Philly - 30-by-35-feet big, on average, with the city's Mural Arts Program collection currently numbering a world-record 1,700 painted walls. On Wednesday, they became an even bigger deal as MAP introduced the new Mural Mile.

The mile is a guided walking tour that visits 17 Center City murals and features an audio accompaniment that's available via MP3 player, cell phone, live guide or a combination. Think of it as Philly's edgier, substantially more contemporary answer to Boston's Freedom Trail. Read more

A Philadelphia Mural Arts Tour offers the official tour of the city's super-sized works of art. Mural tours offer a "behind the scenes" look at how murals are made. Filled with anecdotes and rich with history, the tours leave people with an understanding of the complexities of mural-making and an appreciation of Philadelphia as the world's largest outdoor art gallery. Come explore "the City of Murals" with us!

Dates and Times: Public Tours run April through November on the following days:
Wednesday, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Saturday, 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm
Sunday, 12:30pm - 2:30 pm

Location: Tour departs from the Independence Visitor Center at 6th and Market Streets

Cost: $25 for adults, $23 for seniors 65 and older, $15 for children 3-10, FREE for children under 2

Note: Arrive 30 minutes prior to the tour to allow time to park and use the restroom.

Benjamin Franklin, who recently turned 300, is said to still roam the streets of Old City. The Ghost Tour will visit several of his old haunts, as well as St. Peter's Cemetery, known to be the most haunted site in the city.
